It’s occurred to us that summer is, basically, over. Forget what the blasted thermometer says. Ignore the loudening drumbeat for Halloween and then, ye gods, Christmas (9 weeks, 17 weeks). Overlook the fact that the Chiefs have already played, and lost (I know, pre-season doesn’t matter) with the regular season beginning in just nine days. We, well I, were/was still somewhat in the doldrums, tired of summer.
So we decided to take one of our five mile trips and with the temperature miraculously only in the highish 80s, off we went to Columbus Park. There was a brick building I saw advertised located on 5th street and I wanted to take a look. Don’t ask why, The building was old, as is a lot of Columbus Park, completed in 1823. It was owned by Mr. Joe Vaccaro and it was a soda water company until 1948. Thank you, Internet.

Anyhow, that viewing turned into a wander in what was formerly known as the North End District, home to a large Italian immigrant population and many entrepreneurial businesses. Now there still is interesting architecture, varied housing, and small shops of one kind or another – so kinda the same but with some new housing as well and a year old bar/restaurant we really liked: Wolfepack BBQ.
Owner Jared Wolfe told us everything is fresh, every day (unlike other barbeque joints), burnt ends on Saturdays, and though we just had a drink, we are definitely going back. Their Facebook page has me drooling tonight, a week later.
But that night we wandered back west, still on 5th, to Le Fou Frog after driving up and down several streets. Dependably delicious. Cute still hasn’t been to Happy Gillis, one of my favs for breakfast (and soup) so we have several reasons to go back – maybe when it’s not 100 degrees though.
The short jaunt did remind us: just going a few miles can lead to new discoveries so summer doldrums really shouldn’t exist. What was I thinking? But still, I'm ready for fall. You?
