Everyone we've met in Belize has been polite, friendly, and smiley. We doubt that it's because of the signage in San Pedro, because the people seem just as pleasant on Caye Caulker, a 30 minute ferry ride from here where nary a sign was to be seen.
The signs are all handmade and mostly seem to be the work of one person or group. We don't know how, when or where they first appeared but they are scattered everywhere in San Pedro. There are a few variations but mostly they simply say “Be Kind.” Somehow they seem more sincere than the “I Heart New York” (picture a red heart here which Wix apparently can't do) that I believe occurred at the same time as the city was professionally exhorting New Yokers to be friendlier to tourists, which was probably all about money.
Flip through > the photos below. Most were taken as Cute drove the golf cart, the main and slightly terrifying mode of transportation here, as he determinably and wildly wove through the streets, shouting that he couldn’t stop for photos as someone was right on his tail. (Largely true, I must admit.)
We're not sure of the effect, efficacy, or impact of the signs, and no doubt they often go unseen, but they are nice reminders of how we should all behave. (And there were many, many more, but you get the idea.)
We really liked them.
