The other night it was supposed to rain. More fake news. So Cute and I pivoted from the Prairie Village Art Fair and instead decided to play some games.
We tripped on down to 6th and Walnut and went to Pawn and Pint. This was a laid-back place which I was hoping served more than beers. It did. It also had, I am sure, at least a thousand games, more games than I had ever seen in one place, more games than I imagined could be published, more games than a thousand people could play if they were stuck in the place for an hour or two.
There were new-to-me games, there were childhood games that even I knew like Shutes and Ladders and Parcheesi and Monopoly. There was a Pac-Man in the front along with Ridge Racer and Mortal Kombat. The games are all categorized, like by strategy, games for two people, board games, and categories I would never even think of – what makes a neo-classic?

There were games for sale I’ve never heard of – clearly another life choice I’m ignorant about. There was also a bar of course and our plan was to have something to drink and something to eat. We were only able to do the former which shortened our stay. My guess is, you could bring your own snacks.
To see which exotic and exciting game Cute and I chose, you’ll have to go through the slides. . . it’s the last one. . . which of course I happen to have at home. But it was so much more fun to play it for $5 an hour per person plus the cost of drinks I also can make at home but with music I would never play at home! But somehow, perhaps because of the company I was keeping, it was still fun. Awwwww.
A games bar is another fun way to get out. Most, including this one, have a Trivia Night. There are games for young and old, for the smart and not. Besides the one downtown, I know there are ones on both sides of the state line. Two you could explore are: Up-Down KC on Westport Road and Cardboard Corner Café on 92nd Metcalf and in the Lenexa Public Market,. We realize there are many more – but this is supposed to be a two-minute read. Let us know if you have others to add to the list or if you have a favorite but with limited games – like Ludo’s for shuffleboard or CelinaTio’s Belfy for pool and truly excellent food.
As the evening went on, the rain dissipated, the crowd and the music level increased, and we decided that we would try the art fair anyway. It was lovely there... Cool and not very crowded. The only problem was it ended at 8:00,- so I had to come back on Saturday. Oh wait, also Sunday. The PV Art Fair is getting better and better and if you missed it this year, you should put it in your plans for next. And do a game somewhere, too. You don't have to do both the same night.
