This past Sunday, Cutest and I were enjoying a late summer’s evening. It was one of those where shorts were still the dress of the day but a light jacket defended against any chill after dark.
As the sun sat behind the soon to be completed Buck O’Neil bridge, we drove down to the City Market. Morning and afternoon shoppers had long wandered home with sacks full of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Finding a free parking spot near the Steam Boat Arabia was effortless.
To our delight, on the sidewalk before us was a collection of chalk art. In five-by-five foot squares, artists had drawn (pun intended) from a wide range of subjects. The Minions were frolicking in a pool, a rainbow emblazoned toad scurried along on a bicycle. Further down, a Lion King-like lion surveyed its kingdom, a man chased bubbles and a lady smiled beside her fluffy kitty. I even posed, by invitation, on a 3-D rendering of a Chiefs' SuperBowl ring, which you can see in the slide show below.
These chalk blocks and more were professionally crafted, sponsored by area businesses. For the young at heart and perhaps lacking talent, a section was provided for those who wanted to try their hand, with chalk in hand. In all, a fun, relaxing way to observe creativity and be an art critic.
It reminded us that it’s time to get outside and soak up some of the best days and nights this part of the US of A has to offer. If you don’t, in a blink of an eye, you will suddenly find yourself in a sweater or heavy coat trying to hunt down someone’s elusive Christmas gift as your breath fogs your glasses.
So get out there. You have been forewarned, by The Cutest Couple Ever - since we’re trying to practice what we preach.
